Here’s Why You Never Doubt Your Status as a Triple Option Coach…

Have you started doubting your decision to run the Triple Option?

Are you wondering what all these people are thinking when you call Solid Rebel on 4th and 1 and get stuffed?

Are  you wondering what all these people are thinking when your backside guard is lax on his scoop block, allowing the backside linebacker to run through the A-gap, hit the quarterback on the point, causing the quarterback to fumble, which leads to your team losing the game?

There is an old saying that “If 100 Irishmen tell you you’re drunk, you had better sit down.”  Maybe 100 people are going to tell you that you need to change your Triple Option offense.  According to these people, your offense would have succeeded if you had run the status quo, mainstream, and establishment offense these people witness on Sunday afternoons.

Are you going to start doubting the Triple Option?

You need to ask yourself the following: Am I spending too much time focusing on negative thoughts?  Am I responding to my players effectively?  Am I teaching Triple Option alignment, assignments, techniques, and ball security the best possible way—or am I winging this?

The best possible approach is the following:

1- Identify the biggest ongoing issues with your Triple Option offense.

2- Correct these ongoing issues with practice—not talk or walk—but practice.

3- Continually repeat steps 1 and 2.

Now, if you have done all this, and you are still not getting the results you desire, the time has come to allow someone else into your program to help overcome the obstacles you face which are preventing you from getting to the next level.

The Triple Option offense is the way to go when faced with a roster who simply are below a competitive level for your schedule.  This offense has repeatedly helped Navy, who with zero athletic scholarship players, has won 76 games over the last 9 years.  The teams they play are Division-1 schools, most of which possess 85 scholarship players on their roster.  Navy continues to win with the Triple Option offense.

In 2011, Navy’s starting offensive guards and tackles averaged 268 pounds.   Yet, they averaged 312 yards/game rushing.

Coach, you know this is the way to go, regardless of what the public believes, and coach, you do not have to fight this battle alone anymore.

The Big Idea in 171 Words

Here’s the problem.  If you can’t block defensive linemen, you’ll never move the ball, you’ll never score points, and you’ll never win a game.

You need to understand why this disconnect occurs to overcome it and win.

“I know many coaches would rather install an offense the traditional way by researching it, visiting colleges that run the offense, and then picking coaches for information.

I have used that same strategy, and I know that it takes about three years to really gain an understanding of the offense and get players to execute it at a high level.

Consequently, in the research method, you do not have any collaboration with experts that are readily available when questions arise or resources that have consistency.

We wanted to give our players an offense that they could be successful with immediately.

We also concluded that by the time we visited colleges, bought DVDs, playbooks, and sent players to college camps to gain skills, we would have invested many times the cost of the camp.”
