When players technique their assignment, they must envision the worst case scenario.
This leads to great blocking and ball security in the Triple Option Offense.
The following are the anticipation skills for which to work in the Triple Option Offense:
1- Anticipate the type of movement the defender is going to make and where you have to get to in order to be accurate 100 percent of the time. This is vital for A-backs when blocking #3, the Playside Tackle’s veer release, the B-Back reading the action key, and on ALL scoop blocks.
2- Predict patterns. In game situations, it’s important for players to relay to the coaches what the defense is doing to try to stop the Triple Option. All 11 players must have input on what #1, #2, #3, the Near Deep Defender, and the Action Key are doing on the Triple. Adjustments must be made immediately, not on Sunday.
3- Scouting your opponent’s obvious pass down defensive tendencies. Honestly, it’s a waste of time to watch film on your opponent in run downs because everybody game plans for you differently (even Navy doesn’t watch much film of their opponent on run downs); however, when you have to throw the football, conventional football starts to come back into play and scouting can work to see what your opponent does in obvious pass downs.
These three areas maximize anticipation skills in the Triple Option Offense.
