Zone Option Basics

Zone Option Basics

The Zone Option is run when the Action Key or Mike Linebacker are making the tackle on Triple/Midline.

This is the concept that best constrains them.

Here is how to run the Zone Option. (Note the adjustment made in 2013 by Navy and Georgia Southern with the B-Back and the Playside A)

Playside Receiver- Near Deep Defense

Playside A- Load

Playside Tackle- Veer to Scoop (versus 5 technique)

Playside Guard/Center/Backside Guard/Backside Tackle- Scoop

Backside A- Pitch

Backside Receiver- Cutoff

Quarterback- Zone Steps

B- #3

Here is the Zone Option

Zone Option versus 4-4. Here the Playside Receiver blocks the Near Deep Defender. The Playside A has the inside linebacker. Playside Tackle scoops the 5 while the rest of the Offensive Line scoops to eliminate the run throughs. The Backside A has the pitch and the Backside Receiver has the Cutoff. On Zone Option, the Quarterback takes two steps back, goes down the line, turns up off the Playside Tackle and scores UNLESS #2 steps at him--if so, he parallel pitches. The B-Back has #3.
