Exactly How the Triple Option Becomes Double Option by Default

When Triple Option is called and there is an A-gap defender (1, 2i, or 2 technique), the Center and Playside Guard make an “Ace” call.

This tells the Playside Tackle to Veer inside in order to cancel the B-gap; however, if there is a 4i or 4 technique, the Tackle would NATURALLY veer into the 4i/4 technique.  The Playside Tackle does not have to do anything different; however, this action would get the Quarterback to pull the ball.

The following is how Triple Option becomes Double Option by default.

Triple Option versus an A-gap defender and a 4i/4 NATURALLY turns into Double Option.

Triple Option versus an A-gap defender and a 4i/4 NATURALLY turns into Double Option.

There is no longer a need to CALL Double Option as a concept.  Allow the Double Option to happen naturally.  When the defense has naturally cancelled the A and B-gap by alignment, the ball needs to go on the corner.
