You CAN run Triple Option Out of Multiple Formations
January 14, 2014
Triple Option can be run out of multiple formations; however, eliminate running formations for the sake of running formations.
NEVER sacrifice DISGUISE for EXECUTION.
Every time you utilize a formation, there must be a practical purpose based on what the current defense is doing.
The following are examples of the Triple Option executed out of multiple formations:
Heavy Right, Triple Right v. 6-3.
Here, the Playside Receiver blocks the Near Deep Defender. Since no one is covering any of the deep zones, the Receiver runs to the end zone. If the corner does not run with him, throw Triple Pass to him on the next play.
The Center and Playside Guard Ace the shade. This means the Tackles have to Veer inside on triple. Since there is a 4i, the Playside Tackle attempts to veer inside the 4i… likely this will be a collision and a PULL by the Quarterback.
The Heavy Tackle veers inside.
The B-back runs his dive path and likely will collision the Mike linebacker if the Mike linebacker takes the dive. If the Mike linebacker runs over the top, he will be blocked by the Heavy Tackle.

The Triple Option can really take advantage of defenses when the offense utilizes multiple formations; however, the formations must be utilized with a practical purpose.
