Dr. Lou Cella Football: Triple Option Football Camp #1 Notes

Camp #1 at Cypress Christian went very well, and here are the key points that must occur to accurately execute the Triple Option Offense.

Installation

Day 1- Triple Option

Important Notes

  • The Backside Guard and Center must cancel the A-gaps.
  • The Playside Guard has an awesome responsibility to get movement on the Deuce (Guard/Tackle double team), Ace (Center/Guard double team), and when the Action Key is a 0-technique, the Playside Guard must Base the Mike.  If the Mike runs over the top, the Playside Guard must go right through the Free Safety.
  • The Quarterback must play urgent and accurate regardless of what the Defense does.

  • The Playside Tackle/Guard, Center, and the Backside Guard must cancel the inside gaps.
  • The Quarterback opens, crosses over, steps, crosses over, and steps.  Then, he transfers his weight and throws the ball over the head of the secondary defender the offense is constraining.

Day 3- Midline Lead, Rocket Toss, and Follow

  • On Midline Lead, the Center and Backside Guard must cancel the Action Key–hard.
  • On Midline Lead, the Playside Guard must step, dip, rip and block Mike to Will.
  • The Quarterback must play urgent and accurate regardless of what the Defense does, and if the 3-technique cancels the B, the Quarterback must replace the 3 and immediately get vertical–not outside the Trey.
  • On Rocket Toss, the Playside Guard must get past #1.
  • On Rocket Toss, the Quarterback must take a six-inch punch step with his playside foot, turn around, and pivot a low knuckleball off his hip one yard outside the Playside A’s initial alignment.
