Here’s How Navy Ran Midline Triple Option Nine Times versus UConn’s 50 Defense (2016)
September 15, 2016
After two games, Midline Triple Option is Navy’s #2 concept of 2016.
They run a variation of Midline Triple Option called ZOOM. Zoom is when the Playside A-Back twirls and on the fourth step he dropsteps, crosses over, runs, and is responsible for #3 (run support).
Against a 50 Defense, Navy does this so that the B-Back can make the Noseguard wrong. The Center bases the Nose and the B-Back is running the Midline then taking the ball to the Playside leg of the Guard UNLESS the Nose slants playside. If so, the B-Back stays on the Midline and makes the Noseguard wrong.
Here is exactly what Navy did to UConn’s 50 Defense with Zoom (Midline Triple):
The perimeter is blocked the same as Triple except the Playside A-Back twirls to block the Run Support (#3).
As this occurs, the Playside Tackle and Guard are responsible for the Mike to the Free Safety. The Playside Tackle veers inside to protect the B-gap on Midline.
The Center has the most physically demanding job as he must base and stay in front of the Noseguard. While he is doing this, the Backside Guard has the Backside A-gap and the Backside Tackle has the Backside B-gap.
Nothing changes for the Backside Receiver as he cuts off the corner. While this is ongoing, the Backside A runs the pitch route. He must leave at the snap to avoid two men moving in motion.
The Quarterback takes the snap, jumps into the Backside A-gap, points the ball, gives to the B unless #1 can tackle the B. If so, he re-seats the ball, goes down the line and turns upward outside the tackle unless #2 steps at him. If so, the Quarterback parallel pitches. Navy wants to pitch the ball on Midline Triple. This is no secret. The vast majority of the time they pitch the ball on Midline Triple.
Finally, the B-Back runs a straight line and after he has the ball he breaks through the playside leg of the Center unless the Nose slants–if so, he stays on the Midline to cancel the Nose.
If the Center is not extremely overwhelmed by the 0-technique (Nose), run Midline Triple to make the Nose wrong. With the new “clipping” rule at the high school level, this might be a long-term solution to cancel #1 and #2 versus 50 defenses.
