2025: Time to Bring Back Real, Tough Flexbone Football

Tough Flexbone Football

Coaches, it’s time for a reality check. The shotgun spread has turned football into a soft, watered-down version of what it should be.

Too many teams have forgotten what real football is – controlling the line, grinding out yards, and breaking defenses’ will.

Look at Nebraska: once built on power and grit, now lost in the “flashy” shotgun.

And take a lesson from Air Force – they went 43-15 over five years staying under center and running the ball with purpose. The second they started mixing in the shotgun during early 2024, they struggle to move the ball, even against teams like Merrimack.  Then, by the time they repented and turned back to doing things the right way, they’re 1-7.

This is what happens when teams abandon physical, relentless football for weak, finesse, worldly schemes.

If 2024 didn’t go the way you wanted, maybe it’s time to get back to the basics in 2025.

Ditch the finesse garbage, get under center, and embrace a true identity of triple teaming with the zone dive, follow, and kick concepts.  Add Midline Triple Option to get defenses playing assignment football, mix in the Rocket Toss and run the ball like a man.

Real football is about pounding the ball, controlling the clock, and controlling the line of scrimmage.

Enough of this soft approach – it’s time to bring back real, punishing football and remind your players what toughness looks like.

What is Triple Option Football Academy?

Dr. Lou Cella, Sport and Performance Psychologist, began educating players on the Triple Option offense in the 1990s and this expanded to coaches in the early 2000s. In 2010 Dr. Cella started running camps educating teams on how to run the FBS Triple Option offense, then later formed The Academy in 2013.

Camps are run in a 72-play sequence each day, over a three-day period, with up to three groups simultaneously participating. When the 72-plays are completed, the camp is completed on that day. At the end of each camp day there is a Q&A session with Dr. Cella and the staff. In addition, you receive the Triple Option Football Academy to access to all the resources in order to playcall, install, and practice the Triple Option offense the right way the first time.
