You Have an Under-Committed Group of Players? Get them Good Fast by Running the Triple Option

So you have an under-committed group of players…

Your players aren’t coming to the weight room in the winter and spring because they’re playing other sports, and you have a bunch of kids who know they’re going to play so they just don’t show up.

Then the summer comes, and your kids have every excuse in the book why they can’t get to summer workouts–work, legion baseball, AAU basketball, vacations, and many other examples of rationale.

So it’s the first day of practice and here they come… how are you going to get them to come together?

You’re going to get them to come together with the Triple Option.  Here’s how.

The average high school football offense gets 48 plays/game.

You’re going to spend 1/3 of your practice time running Triple Option.

In 2014, during Georgia Tech’s amazing season, 1/3 of their offense was Triple Option.  So you’re doing exactly what they did.

Then, you’re going to give your players the following two answers:

1- If #1 (read key) takes the B-Back when we run Triple Option, we are going to fake the Triple and throw the ball.  When the defense makes the Quarterback pull the ball, the secondary must cover the Quarterback and the pitch.  Therefore the defense has to sacrifice pass coverage for run support.

Triple Pass Right v. 4-4 (Split) Defense. Versus ONE safety defenses, the Playside Receiver and Playside A run verticals. The Quarterback stares down the safety from the time he gets out of the huddle and throws over the safety's head UNLESS the safety backpedals at the snap--if so, the Quarterback throws the ball into the lawn (Playside Receiver). The Offensive Line slides away from the call, the B-back blocks the 1st threat off the Playside Tackle and the Backside A runs the pitch route and kicks out the first threat off the B. The Backside Receiver runs a 17-yard drag.

2- If #1 does not take the B-Back when we run Triple Option, we are going to get the ball outside.  This is because they are forcing us to give the ball and box us inside.  Therefore, we will get the ball outside with the Rocket Toss and the Zone Option.
