If You Want to be Like the 2014 Georgia Tech Offense–Run Triple, Zone Dive, and Rocket

If You Want to be Like the 2014 Georgia Tech Offense–Run Triple, Zone Dive, and Rocket

Eight (8) of Georgia Tech’s 2014 football games were evaluated: Georgia, Florida State, Miami, Virginia, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Pittsburgh, and Clemson.

The following are the results of the study:

Triple Option and Zone Dive (w/ “Pin” technique) were executed 271 of 598 possible plays.  This was 45% of their offense in these eight games.

Rocket Toss was executed 46 of 598 possible plays.  This was 8% of their offense in these eight games.

Dropback Pass Variations were executed 52 of 598 possible plays.  This was 9% of their offense in these eight games.

The most interesting data resulting from the study was a lack of Midline (with variations) run. Midline occurred 26/598 times (4% of offense) with the second-team offense running nearly half of those Midline Options.

In Summary

Triple Option, Zone Dive, and Rocket Toss are the runs that matter most to Georgia Tech.  This was 53% of their offense in their eight games.

The average high school football offense runs 48 plays in a game.  If a high school coach were to follow what Georgia Tech has done, they would distribute the offense in the following manner:

Triple Option and Zone Dive- 22 plays/game

Rocket Toss- 4 plays/game

Dropback Pass Variations- 4 plays/game

Other- 18 plays/game
