You Can Throw Four Verticals in the Triple Option Offense… Just Like Those “Spread” Teams Do

You don’t need to wear a visor and vote Democrat to throw Four Verticals.

When executing Four Verticals in the Triple Option Offense, you blow the top off the coverage.

Just when the Secondary is focused on sacrificing pass coverage for run support… well, here you go.

On Four Verticals, the Receivers Fade to the sideline, the A-Back away from the call side runs up the field, and the Playside A-Back runs up the field UNLESS the middle of the field is open.  If so, he bends into the middle of the field once he gets 10 yards vertically up the field.

The Offensive Line slides away from the call, the B-Back slides to the call, and the Quarterback five-step drops and throws to the Playside A-Back UNLESS the Safety covers him.  If so, the ball is thrown to the Backside A-Back.

Advantages of the Spread Formation in the Triple Option Offense

Triple Option Football Academy

Paul Johnson likely wishes that he, Tim Stowers, and Erk Russell came up with another name for this formation.

When they started running Triple Option out of the “Spread” formation in 1985, this represented the balanced set seen below:

Here are the advantages of the Spread Formation in the Triple Option Offense

The balanced structure of the offense creates balance in defense.  This leads to 3-on-2 matchups when running the Triple Option.

Defenses must decide if the offense is 2X2 or 1X1 due to the alignment of the slots.

Four verticals blows the top off coverages, especially Cover 3 as seen below:

Over the last several years, Navy has utilized the Spread formation more than any other formation.  Navy stayed balanced 7 out of every 10 plays in 2013.

Running Four Verticals out of the Spread Formation for a Big Play Passing Game

Running Four Verticals out of the Spread Formation is fairly simplistic.

1- Four Verticals is called to one particular side.  If the middle of the field is closed, the Quarterback will throw the ball to the A-Back who the Free Safety does not cover.

Four Verticals vs. one-high safety.

2- If the middle of the field is open, throw to the Playside A-Back who will run the post in the middle of the field.

Vert Right versus Two-High Safeties. The Playside A runs to seven yards and posts into the middle of the field because it is open.

This simplistic concept blows the top off the coverage and leads to big plays.

Utilizing the Freeze Concept to Run the Triple Option Offense

Freeze is utilized when a defense is stemming, stunting, and blitzing in an effort to reveal themselves before the snap.

Once the defense reveals themselves, the Quarterback can put the offense in the best possible play.
