Two Major Errors in Triple Option Tactics and Strategy

Triple Option Football Academy -- The Flexbone Offense from Army & Navy

There are two things that must be considered regarding Triple Option Strategy:

1- You get very few victories on Triple Option tactics.  You win every year by out blocking your opponent, perfect ball security, and efficient running.

2- Too many plays.  Subtract the number of different plays utilized in the game from the total number of plays you practiced. If this number is too large you better get rid of some plays. It is difficult enough to know when to run off- tackle, but if you have four ways to run off-tackle, you will never get the right play. Beauty of Triple Option–very minimal number of concepts.

According to Coach Johnson: When the Playside Tackle is able to Veer inside to the Mike Linebacker (vs. 1/2i/2 technique), the Tackle can oversplit.

This means that the Playside Tackle can continue to widen his split until two defenders jump into the B-gap.

Coach Johnson says that even when the defense puts one of the two defenders in the B-gap, one of the two defenders in the B-gap must take the B-Back or the defense is going to have real problems.

Great read.

Coach Johnson indicates that if #1 and #2 are sitting in a stacked position on Triple Option and are sedentary post-snap, it’s time to run Double Option.

This is because the Triple Option becomes a give read where #2 can fold inside and hold the give to a four-yard gain.

According to Coach Johnson, “After a while, you’re going to get tired of four-yard gains.”

Double Option forces #2 to play the Quarterback or the pitch instead of folding inside on the dive.

One of the many double options that can be run is Double Option with a “Tiger” call.

Coach Johnson says: When #3 takes the Quarterback and #2 runs out to take the pitch, run Triple Pass Switch to take advantage of #3’s aggressiveness as #3 is flying up to stop the Quarterback.

This is how Triple Pass Switch is executed versus the 3-2 Exchange:

Paul Johnson Triple Option Strategy Lesson #1

From the Nike Clinic

Paul Johnson says not to worry about how many defenders tackle the B-Back on Triple Option.

This is due to the fact that if #1 cancels the B-Back on the Triple Option, the B-Back won’t have the football.

Bottom Line: Focus on how #1 is playing the Triple Option.  Is he canceling the B-Back or not?

If he is, run Zone Dive (with Pin) to cutoff #1 from getting to the B-Back (illustrated here).

If not, load #1 and run any two-way, double option to get the ball kicked on the perimeter.

When the Outside Linebacker is keying the A-Back on the Triple Option, the Playside A-Back and Playside Receiver swap assignments.

Here, the Playside Receiver blocks #3 and the Playside A blocks the Deep Defender. Since the Outside Linebacker is running with the Playside A, there is no one from the defense cancelling the Quarterback on a pull read. Here, the Playside Receiver blocks #3 and the Playside A blocks the Deep Defender.
