Running Midline to the Trips Side

The Trips formation creates a numbers advantage to the Trips side.  This forces the defense to bring someone over from the backside to the formation-side to match numbers.  Otherwise, the offense has the numbers advantage.  If this is the case and they set the 3-technique to the formation-side, run Midline White.

Trips Right, Midline White Right Quarterback gives the ball to the B-Back unless the 3-technique cancels the B-Back. If so, the Quarterback replaces the 3-technique and scores.

Utilizing the Trips Formation in the Triple Option Offense

Trips has a couple of purposes in the Triple Option Offense.

This 3X1 formation is utilized to gain a numbers advantage to a single side.

The Trips formation aids in several run-based concepts.

In addition, throwing the ball out of the Trips formation can be helpful to gain a numbers, angles, or field advantage.

Below is the article that covers the Trips Formation:

Georgia Tech’s Zone Option Variation Run versus Vanderbilt (9/17/16)

On Saturday, (9/17/16), Georgia Tech’s second touchdown versus Vanderbilt came on a Zone Option variation.

Georgia Tech motions the Left A-Back to the right.  The Playside Receiver cracks the Mike while the Guard and Tackle double #1.  Both A-Backs are in charge of the perimeter.  The Quarterback and B-Back are 2-on-1 versus #2.

This is run when #1 is coming up the field and forcing a give read.  Georgia Tech wants to get the ball outside on this drive… and they nicely do so for six points.

Here is Georgia Tech’s Zone Option variation:

Also, here is video of the concept being executed.  Watch starting at the :25 mark.

Properly Utilizing the Trips Formation in the Triple Option Offense

In this episode, Dr. Cella discusses how to properly utilize the Trips formation in the Triple Option Offense.  Dr. Cella advocates that Trips should predominantly be utilized to throw the ball and to run Midline White.  Several coaches over-utilize formations in the Triple Option Offense and an overall use of formations leads to a vast number of mistakes by the players AND coaches in the Triple Option Offense.  Also, Dr. Cella provides interesting data and empirical research on first down rushing.  The Triple Option Football Academy Podcast with Dr. Lou Cella is published at the start of every day on tripleoptionfootball.com.

Triple Option Football Coaching: Load Situation on Triple Option with the Playside Tackle and A-Back

When #3 is in the middle of the field, the Playside A-back loads.

This means that he takes a straight path to #3.

But, what if the Playside Linebacker runs over the top of the Playside Tackle’s Veer Block?

LOAD SITUATION ON TRIPLE WITH PLAYSIDE TACKLE AND A-BACK

What happens is that the footwork of the Playside Tackle and Playside A-Back stay the same, but they end up naturally changing responsibilities.

The Playside Tackle does NOT chase the Playside Linebacker… he continues to the third level and blocks the safety.

The Playside A-Back punches his inside hand through the outside breastplate of the Playside Linebacker and pounds his arches.

This is how the Triple Option is properly executed in a LOAD situation.

“I know many coaches would rather install an offense the traditional way by researching it, visiting colleges that run the offense, and then picking coaches for information.

I have used that same strategy, and I know that it takes about three years to really gain an understanding of the offense and get players to execute it at a high level.

Consequently, in the research method, you do not have any collaboration with experts that are readily available when questions arise or resources that have consistency.

Triple Option Football Playbook: Triple Option versus the 7-Diamond Defense

This question was recently posed to the Triple Option Football Academy…

How would you run Triple Option versus the 7-Diamond Defense?

The client saw this defense in a game situation.

Well… since the Triple Option is a systematic offense, the answers are systematic answers….

TRIPLE V 7 DIAMOND

Triple Rules

PR- Near Deep Defender

PA- #3 (Load because #3 is in the middle of the field)

PT- Veer (He veers in because he’s getting an ACE call… if he doesn’t veer across the 4-technique, the Quarterback would obviously pull the ball)

PG- Base to Ace (He and Center ACE the 2-technique)

C- Veer to Ace (He and the Playside Guard ACE the 2-technique)

BG, BT- Scoop

BA- Pitch

BR- Cutoff

Q- Veer #1, Pitch #2 (Anticipate the blood stunt with #2 on the line of scrimmage)

B- Veer Path

In case you ever see this “junk” defense, you have your answer.  Keep this article for future reference.

Triple Option Football Playbook: Demonstrating How the Odd Stack Defense (3-3-5, 3-5-3, 5-3) Can Stunt Themselves Right into a Loss

Often times the Odd Stack does well at the high school level because of all the stunts and games that they provide.

Versus the Triple Option Offense, the Odd Stack can literally stunt themselves right out of the game.

Here is one example how.

When the Odd Stack Defense easy stunts on Counter Option, the Stacked linebacker blitzes through B-gap.

The Backside Guard’s job is to SCOOP #1.

If the Stacked Linebacker blitzes through the B-gap, he’s going to be in the Playside Guard’s path–and thus–he gets TRAPPED.

Look at what happens from here.

COUNTER OPTION V THE ODD STACK EASY STUNT

The Quarterback is able to turn it up and neither #1 or #2 can come close to  him.

Because of the alignment of the defense, nobody can make a play until the third level.

The Mike is totally out of position as he is totally out leveraged by the Playside Guard’s base block.

The only chance left is the 0-technique versus the Center’s Base Block… and once he sees the B-back going away from the play, where do you think he’s going?

So fear NOT coaches… when you see the Odd Stack… expect dominance.  You have all the answers RIGHT HERE.

Use this article as a reference guide when you face the Odd Stack in 2014…

Triple Option Football Academy’s 400th Article–Seven Lessons on the High-Performance Football Coaching Process

University of Alabama, Head Football Coach, Nick Saban is definitely making the word “process” popular.

The American Football Sports Science-Mental Conditioning Academy (AFSSMCA) and the Triple Option Football Academy’s mission is built on the teachings of Nick Saban.

The mission is to lead the high-performance football environment by creating teamwork, educational action, anticipation, motivation, leadership, communication, competitiveness, and character through sports science and mental conditioning practices.

There are great lessons to learn about high-performance.  These are the top seven.

  1. Prioritize the actual elements of success to create extraordinary results.
  2. Football programs are defined by what their players do on the backside of a play.
  3. Fanatical acts of perfection lead to excellence.
  4. High-status coaches are funny, connect with people, and practice their theories instead of discuss them.
  5. The fastest way to win is by performing a series of mechanical operations on something in order to change behavior.
  6. When coaches are given something to do, they must do it with an enthusiastically high level of effort—and then they’re going to keep getting more things to do.
  7. Discipline is defined by Webster as “the training of mind and character.”  Bob Knight defines disciplines as recognizing what has to be done, doing it as well as you can, and doing it that way all the time.”

Triple Option Football Playbook: Running Follow out of Heavy Versus the Bear Front

On the Goal-line, Follow is the first answer.

Follow is run the same as Triple except the Playside Tackle bases and the Quarterback follows the B-back.

Since there are two playside Tackles in Heavy, both of them Base.

One thing to keep in mind is the following: Since Follow can be run to a 3-technique, the Playside Guard does base the 3.

Usually, on Triple Option, this defaults to Midline, so the Playside Guard is not used to basing the 3-technique.

He does on the Follow.

Triple Option Football Playbook: Rocket Toss Versus Cover 2

This is Rocket Left Versus Okie with Cover 2 at the snap.

The PWR has the near deep defender and the PA dropstep-crossover-runs to #3–he will run the circle and turn up to run the circle on #3 UNLESS #3 flies past the line of scrimmage, which turns into a trap block for the PA.

The PT and PG, in the words of Ken Niumatalolo, “just run.”

The PA, PT, and PG dropstep-crossover-run. Often, the cognitive visual picture given to these three players is, “Steal second base.”

The technique of stealing second base is comparable to the PA, PT, and PG technique on Rocket.

The rest of the Offensive Line Scoops and the Backside Receiver has the Cutoff.

The B-Back runs his Zone Path away from the call.
