Introducing the Zone Option Switch versus the 5-technique

Introducing the Zone Option Switch versus the 5-technique

Navy Football is doing this much more in 2013.

Versus a 5-technique, the Playside Tackle is making a “Switch” call.

Here, the Playside A-back blocks Down on the 5-technique, the Playside Tackle veers inside and tracks the Mike to the Free Safety, and the B-back blocks #3.

If the Playside Tackle blocks the Mike, the B-Back blocks the Free Safety, who is #3 in this situation anyway.  If the Mike runs over the top, the Playside Tackle continues to the Free Safety and the B-Back blocks the Mike.

This  is how the Zone Option Switch looks versus the Split 4-4 defense (most common high school defense).

This is done because the Playside Tackle is having a tough time blocking the 5 on Zone Option and the Playside A-back has the 5-technique outflanked.
