The Triple Option Process
January 12, 2014
Triple Option is run as the default concept of the offense. The reason for running Triple Option is to eliminate blocking all defensive linemen outside of the Playside Guard.
The following is the Triple Option:
Triple Option versus 50.
Playside Receiver- Near Deep Defender
Playside A- #3
Playside Tackle- Veer
Playside Guard- Base to Ace
Center- Veer to Ace
Backside Guard/Tackle- Scoop
Backside A- Pitch
Backside Receiver- Cutoff
Quarterback- Veer #1, Pitch #2
B- Veer Path-Bend behind Action Key
If a 3-technique aligns to the call side, the Triple Option moves inside one hole and defaults to Zoom (Midline Triple). This way, the 3-technique and the defensive lineman touching the Playside Tackle can be read.

Playside Receiver- Near Deep Defender
Playside A- Twirl, #3
Playside Tackle/Guard- Veer
Center/Backside Guard- Ace
Backside Tackle- Scoop
Backside A- Pitch
Backside Receiver- Cutoff
Quarterback- Mid #1, Pitch #2
B- Mid Path–Bend off Action Key
Now, when a 3-technique AND a Playside Safety align to the call side, the Triple Option defaults to Lead (Midline Double). This is because the Playside Tackle cannot veer into the safety and bringing an extra blocker from the backside to the playside is required to cancel the safety.
This is Midline Lead versus a 4-3/6-1 situation.
Playside Receiver- Near Deep Defender
Playside A/Tackle- Fan
Playside Guard- Veer
Center/Backside Guard- Ace
