Zone Dive—Navy Says there is Only ONE Situation in Which They Run this Concept

Triple Option Football Academy

In this podcast, Dr. Cella discusses the Zone Dive.  Navy says they only run Zone Dive in one situation–versus a 4-3 with #1 cancelling the B-Back and the Mike Linebacker taking the pitch; however, coaches are enamored by the concept.  Dr. Cella states that coaches are in love with the Zone Dive because the play is easy to run and requires less coaching.  The issue becomes that if the play is run against something other than a 4-3 with #1 cancelling the B-Back and the Mike taking the pitch, the play is only effective if the offense possesses vast physical superiority.  When Zone Dive works against anything else, the offense is simply “getting lucky.”
