Modernize Your Triple Option Offense with These Three Concepts

Modernize Your Triple Option Offense with These Three Concepts

In 2016, Army’s Under-Center Triple Option Offense averaged 340 rushing yards/game (#2 in FBS).

They finished with their best record since 1996.

Their Offensive Line averaged 270 pounds.

In 2016, Navy’s Under-Center Triple Option Offense averaged 311 rushing yards/game (#4 in FBS).

They achieved their highest national ranking since 1963.

Their Offensive Line averaged 290 pounds.

In their 2016 bowl games, they ran the following identical three concepts a total of 61 times: Triple Option, Zone Option, and Zoom (Midline Triple Option).

Triple Option was utilized 30 times combined by Army and Navy.  This is the base concept.

Triple Option versus 50 Defense. PR- Deep Defender PA- 3 PT- Veer PG- Base to Ace C- Veer to Ace BG/BT- Scoop BA- Pitch BR- Cutoff Q- Veer 1 Pitch 2 B- Veer Path

Zone Option was utilized 18 times combined by Army and Navy.  This is utilized when the defense forces a GIVE read on Triple Option.  In this case–Army and Navy utilize the Zone Option as their answer to get the ball away from the dive-cancelling defenders.

Zone Option versus Triple Stack Defense. The Playside A-Back blocks #2 when #3 is on the Line of Scrimmage. Also, the B-Back has Mike to Free Safety, and often versus a Triple Stack, he will end up on the Free Safety as the Free Safety has a better angle than the Mike to make the tackle on Zone Option.

Zoom (Midline Triple Option) was utilized 13 times combined by Army and Navy.  This is utilized when the defense forces a PULL read on Triple Option.  Zoom moves the Triple Option in one hole, and Zoom gives the Quarterback more time to react versus a potential blood stunt.

The average high school football offense runs 48 plays/game.

Triple Option, Zone Option, and Zoom (Midline Triple Option) were run an average of 31 plays/game.  This would be 65% of a high school’s Triple Option Offense.

If we learned anything about Army and Navy’s great 2016 seasons, they utilized Triple Option, Zone Option, and Zoom (Midline Triple Option) as their top three concepts.

Utilize these three concepts to modernize your 2017 Triple Option Offense.
