Flexbone Triple Option Offense: Army and Air Force’s Core Plays and Formations

Core Plays

  • Zone Dive is Army and Air Force’s number one play.
  • Midline Triple Option is Army and Air Force’s number two play and both academies utilize this when the C gap player takes the dive on zone dive.
  • Zone Dive and Midline Triple Option are the only two concepts that both academies run 4+ times/game.
  • Army prefers the Follow and Kick tags off zone dive when the C-gap player takes the quarterback while Air Force prefers the trap.
  • Both academies utilize switch and boot to constrain the corner, while both utilize vert to constrain the single high safety.
  • Rocket Toss is utilized by both to beat the blitz. They don’t get a lot of blitzes usually due to the risk involved.

Core Formations

  • Flex is the predominant formation in both the Army and Air Force offense. Just about every concept is run from flex.
  • Spread is utilized to run midline triple option, trap, rocket, and switch.
  • Heavy is utilized to run the zone dive series and rocket toss so they can get a numbers advantage to make the concept work better.
