How to Compose Your Own Triple Option Offense: Offensive Coordinator 101

Dr. Cella, Owner of the Triple Option Football Academy says that before you can ever teach players how to run the Triple Option, you must do the following:

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1- Triple Option Offense Core Values
Step 2- Hiring Assistant Coaches for the Triple Option Offense
Step 3- Ordering Equipment for the Triple Option Offense
Step 4- Practicing the Triple Option Offense
Step 5- Huddle
Step 6- Cadence
Step 7- Spread Formation
Step 8- Count System

Then, you can install the Triple Option.

After you install the Triple Option and rep the Triple Option versus 7-man fronts, 8-man fronts, Eagle defenses, and even 9-man fronts, then you must have an answer for the following:

What do you do when the defense forces you to give the ball and you can’t get 4 yards on the Triple?

Answer: Get the ball outside with Zone Option and Rocket Toss.

After you create the answer to when #1 doesn’t take the B-Back, then you must create the answer to when #1 does take the B-Back.

Answer: Throw Triple Pass.

When the defense makes the Quarterback pull the ball, the secondary must sacrifice pass coverage for run support.  So throw over the top of the secondary.

Triple Pass Right v. 4-4 (Split) Defense. Versus ONE safety defenses, the Playside Receiver and Playside A run verticals. The Quarterback stares down the safety from the time he gets out of the huddle and throws over the safety's head UNLESS the safety backpedals at the snap--if so, the Quarterback throws the ball into the lawn (Playside Receiver). The Offensive Line slides away from the call, the B-back blocks the 1st threat off the Playside Tackle and the Backside A runs the pitch route and kicks out the first threat off the B. The Backside Receiver runs a 17-yard drag.Triple Pass v. 4-3 Cover 2 Versus TWO safety defenses, the Playside Receiver runs a SKINNY POST and the Playside A runs a WHEEL. The Quarterback stares down the safety from the time he gets out of the huddle and throws over the safety's head UNLESS the safety backpedals at the snap--if so, the Quarterback throws the ball into the lawn (Playside A). The Offensive Line slides away from the call, the B-back blocks the 1st threat off the Playside Tackle and the Backside A runs the pitch route and kicks out the first threat off the B. The Backside Receiver runs a 17-yard drag.
