The Switch concept from the Spread formation is the most common Playaction concept over the years from Coach Paul Johnson.

Protection

The Offensive Line slides away from the call. This means if the pass is called to the right, the Offensive Line takes two steps to the left and THEN strikes the threat in their gap. If there is no threat in their gap, they keep sliding until there is. The B touches the Playside Guard, flattens out, and blocks the first threat off the Playside Tackle. Backside A runs the pitch and kicks out the first threat off the B.

Routes

The Playside Receiver takes three steps up the field and on his fourth step, he steps at 15 degrees to run the skinny post. Playside A takes three flat steps and on his fourth step, steps at 45 degrees. He stares at the corner and once he gets to the numbers, the Playside A runs wheels up the numbers. Backside Receiver runs 10 yards down the field and posts.

Quarterback

Quarterback five-step drops. There is no more ball fake. Army and Navy stopped this in 2019 because 1. The B is to whom the defense is attracted and 2. They need to get the ball out faster. Quarterback reads the corner. On the fifth step he gets rid of the ball and throws the skinny post UNLESS the corner covers the skinny. If that’s the case, he throws the wheel route.
