Four Focal Points to Lead Your Triple Option Offensive Reinvention in 2020

  1. Look at trends.

Navy won 11 games with 0 athletic scholarship football players and playing FBS Football. What can you learn from this 2019 phenomenon?  They ran Triple Option and Zone Option 1/3 of the time and could have run these two concepts more.

  1. Look at your competitors.

Competition is healthy. There are a lot of smart people out there.  What are they doing? If you take the time to study what your competitors are doing, it will help you to identify gaps in your offense on which no one is focusing. Gaps lead to opportunities.

Once again, how often are you running Triple Option?  Are you a Triple Option program or are you a program that runs the Triple Option concept?

  1. Look at your overhead.

A large number of coaches would have their job if they just spent more time studying the profits and losses. If you’re practicing a concept and not running that concept in the game, you’re wasting time.

  1. Drop the dogs.

The next step is the most important: Drop the dogs! When you find things that are not helping you grow, you have to shed them — fast.   Drop EVERYTHING in your offense that you do not utilize at least four times a game.  Arizona Cardinals’ Offensive Line Coach, Larry Zierlein says that you must run a concept at least four times/game for that concept to get that concept to work over an extended period of time.  This is based on his NFL Run Studies over the last two decades.  Drop the concepts that you don’t utilize in a game.  Spend time on what you do utilize.  Work on the Triple Option, Zone Option, and throwing off the Triple.  This will help you get good fast!
