Triple Option Football Academy Mailbag–11/12/13

The following are questions the Triple Option Football Academy has received over the last week:

1. How do you attack the 3-5 and 4-3?
A: Run Triple.  Yes, that’s your OFFENSE.  Versus the 4-3 when the 3-technique is on the call side, the play defaults to Midline Lead.

 2. What are the top Triple Option pass plays?

A: Triple Pass, Four Verticals, and Sprint Pass are the top three.

3. What are the formations utilized to run the Triple Option?

A: Right here.

 4. How do you run the Counter Option?

A: Right here.

5. What is the Quarterback’s process on Triple Option?

A: The quarterback takes the snap; seats the ball; hops into the playside A-gap; extends his elbows; gives ball to B-back UNLESS #1 can tackle the B-back; if so, reseed the ball, replace the read, and score UNLESS #2 steps at the Quarterback; if so, parallel pitch.

 6. What can you do out of Trips with the Triple Option Offense?

A: Primarily throw Four Verticals and Sprint Pass; however, if they bring a defender over from the backside to the playside on Trips, Triple Option can be run to the Trips side.  These are the basics.

 7. What are the key reads in the Triple Option offense?

A: The read is defined as #1 in the Triple Option offense.

Triple Option- #1 is the defensive lineman touching the Playside Tackle.

Midline- #1 is the 3-technique.

 8. What is the “Blood Stunt?”

A: This is when #1 and #2 come hard and force the Quarterback to quickly pitch the football on Triple and Zoom (Midline Triple).

 9. What are the blocking rules on the Triple Option?

A: Playside Receiver- Near Deep Defender; Playside A- #3; Playside Tackle- Veer; Playside Guard- Base to Ace; Center- Veer to Ace; Backside Guard/Tackle- Scoop; Backside Receiver- Cutoff

 10. Does the Triple Option Football Academy have coaching clinics?

A: Yes—right here.

The Big Idea in 171 Words

Here’s the problem.  If you can’t block defensive linemen, you’ll never move the ball, you’ll never score points, and you’ll never win a game.

You need to understand why this disconnect occurs to overcome it and win.

“I know many coaches would rather install an offense the traditional way by researching it, visiting colleges that run the offense, and then picking coaches for information.

I have used that same strategy, and I know that it takes about three years to really gain an understanding of the offense and get players to execute it at a high level.

Consequently, in the research method, you do not have any collaboration with experts that are readily available when questions arise or resources that have consistency.

We wanted to give our players an offense that they could be successful with immediately.

We also concluded that by the time we visited colleges, bought DVDs, playbooks, and sent players to college camps to gain skills, we would have invested many times the cost of the camp.”
