The Big Idea in 171 Words

Here’s the problem.  If you can’t block defensive linemen, you’ll never move the ball, you’ll never score points, and you’ll never win a game.

You need to understand why this disconnect occurs to overcome it and win.

“I know many coaches would rather install an offense the traditional way by researching it, visiting colleges that run the offense, and then picking coaches for information.

I have used that same strategy, and I know that it takes about three years to really gain an understanding of the offense and get players to execute it at a high level.

Consequently, in the research method, you do not have any collaboration with experts that are readily available when questions arise or resources that have consistency.

We wanted to give our players an offense that they could be successful with immediately.

We also concluded that by the time we visited colleges, bought DVDs, playbooks, and sent players to college camps to gain skills, we would have invested many times the cost…”

Heavy Right, Triple Right v. 6-3. Here, the Playside Receiver blocks the Near Deep Defender. Since no one is covering any of the deep zones, the Receiver runs to the end zone. If the corner does not run with him, throw Triple Pass to him on the next play. The Center and Playside Guard Ace the shade. This means the Tackles have to Veer inside on triple. Since there is a 4i, the Playside Tackle attempts to veer inside the 4i... likely this will be a collision and a PULL by the Quarterback. The Heavy Tackle veers inside. The B-back runs his dive path and likely will collision the Mike linebacker if the Mike linebacker takes the dive. If the Mike linebacker runs over the top, he will be blocked by the Heavy Tackle.

The Triple Option Football Turnaround Project: Theory of Action and Objectives

When turning around a Triple Option Offense, all coaches must develop a theory of action, specific to the Triple Option offense. The Triple Option Offensive Plan must focus on establishing priorities to achieve rapid and meaningful improvement. Once drafted, coaches present their plan and receive direct feedback from assistant coaches. By the end of training camp you must have a defined plan that you can put into action right away.

Triple Option Offensive Objectives

  • Develop a theory of action— wherever you may be in the turnaround effort—focusing on establishing priorities to achieve rapid and meaningful improvement
  • Lead effective transformation of offensive culture
  • Understand how to use data effectively to set strategy and drive integrated decision-making on the practice field
  • Drive high-quality instruction and instructional leadership
  • Determine how best to track and assess progress and strategies for communicating your vision to the players, coaches, and stakeholders

The Triple Option Football Turnaround Project: Overview

In your first year as a Triple Option leader, you must analyze elements critical to your offense’s turnaround plan. There is great importance of demonstrating high instructional quality and expectations, translating data into action, developing effective teams, leading a change effort, and creating meaningful engagement with players and coaches.

Triple Option Offense turnaround efforts require highly effective leaders able to create the conditions for rapid and sustained change. To successfully impact player outcomes, leaders in turnaround contexts must drive a fundamental shift in offensive culture and instructional practice that results in early gains and ongoing high performance. The demands are great, but the need to improve the opportunities for our offensive players is even greater.

Coaches must demonstrate an understanding of how to do the following:

  • Transform offensive football culture
  • Identify and achieve early success
  • Measure your results
  • Understand how to best align offensive-level efforts with conference and statewide programs
  • Implement your new theory of action

The Triple Option Process: Seven Crucial Awareness Points for Avoiding Failure

When installation the Triple Option you must get to potential issues before they ever start.

The following seven (7) crucial awareness points must create mindfulness in the coaching staff:

1- Allowing complacency.

Players have to continually focusing on improving through the process.

2- Failure to guide through the process.

Coaches have to COACH and these coaches must continually provide players with information on techniquing their assignment.

3- Underestimating the power of vision.

Coaches have to utilize Navy as a model.

4- Permitting obstacles to block the vision.

When people, places, things, or ideas block the offense from looking like Navy, thwart these obstacles with overwhelming force.

5- Failing to create short-term victories within the process.

Players must know when they’ve achieved success in each stage of the process.

6- Declaring victory too soon.

Coaches must accept that it takes 66 practices to start a habit (2013 study) and that the coach’s work is never done.

7- Neglecting to firmly anchor changes in the football culture.

This is about constantly fixing mistakes in alignment, assignment, and technique.

The Playside Tackle has the key block as he scoops the 5-technique (must stay on his feet). The B-Back has an easy block as he walls off the Mike linebacker. The Quarterback is going to pitch off a widened #2. Unless the defense brings someone over from the backside to the over side, they are going to have difficulty defensing this concept.

“The biggest thing for us is that it gave our kids the opportunity to work together in our offensive system before the season started–the techniques and fundamentals they learned was so big, so was the team bonding, and so was having an outside source (Lou Cella) teaching them–this was invaluable.”

“We were looking to take that next step, and felt that a camp might be just what the doctor ordered. We were not disappointed. We were already committed to the triple option, but the camp brought a much higher level of focus and understanding to our team, both players and coaches. Now when we tell our kids to ‘trust the system’ they know what we’re talking about.”

About

Six Things Successful Triple Option Leaders Do Differently

1- They put relationships first.

There is an inherent focus on building relationship with the coaching staff and the Quarterback.

2- They know that meaning matters.

These coaches understand that the offense is more than a play… these coaches understand that the offense allows for 10 other people to live a better life because the Quarterback serves them by cancelling two people based on his perception.

3- They lead and live with their strengths.

These coaches understand that the assistant coaches, the Quarterback, perfect ball security, and very system-specific detailed blocking is what truly matters for long-term Triple Option Offensive success.

4- They manage pessimistic thinking.

They focus their time and energy on where they have control, they “embrace the suck” and understand that while the ride might be bumpy at times, it won’t last forever.

5- They make their own luck.

Researchers studied an incoming class of cadets at West Point in order to better understand why certain cadets dropped out and others continued along the path of military mastery. What they found is that the group who stayed was not more athletic, well-rounded or smarter—they were grittier; in fact, grit was a better predictor of success for these cadets than IQ or standardized test scores (Duckworth, Peterson, Matthews, & Kelly, 2007). Successful leaders pursue goals with passion, don’t back down from challenges, don’t allow a failure to define who they are as a person, and simply put, don’t quit.

6- They manage their energy.

Triple Option Leaders don’t watch much film of their opponent, because it doesn’t matter.  Great Triple Option Leaders watch film of THEIR TEAM and correct the internal conflicts that are occurring within THEIR OFFENSE.
